I've done it. I've gone onto the NaNoWriMo website and created my novel. Well actually, I guess I re-created my novel as I started writing it last NaNo and reached 25,000 words before I stopped. Work was intense and I just had so much on that instead of the kind of fun 'I'm behind! NaNo is so hard but I can do this' feeling I started having sleepless 'I'm a failure' kind of thoughts. So I stopped.

Last year I started re-writing my chick-lit novel. I have a completed draft but as I have mentioned before it was written too seriously and I changed tense after 50,000 words and then I decided to change the plot so starting again seemed like a better idea than editing what I had. The plan this year is to pick up where I left off last November at the 25k mark of my story. Yes, that's right, I haven't touched my WIP since last November. Shocking.

This plan means I need to read through what I have and heck my plot as I know I have thought of my first <strike>baby</strike> story often and have had some ideas and I can't actually remember if they formed part of the plot last time.

So, my plan is simple. Write as much as I can in November and hope for 50k because let's face it, winning NaNo feels amazing. I don't have many weekend plans this November which is good as I often end up with plans every weekend of November and I think with my weekdays as they are the weekends are going to be crucial.

I am on half-term this week (I'm a teacher) so the plan is to do lots of preparation and reading and just get ready. And then next weekend write like the wind and try and get a good head start!

So, I hope so of you out there are taking part this year and we can have millions of sprints and motivational tweeting sessions. I am so excited to dive back into my WIP but I do want to enjoy the month so I am determined not to get too stressed. Remind me of that!
So last Friday I should have posted something but I didn't. So I am going to now!

When I started this blog three years ago I was writing it solely for myself and so I could take part in ROW80 and post my progress. Now it is the place where I was able to share the news that I was joint winner of the Sunlounger 2 short story competition and post this beautiful front cover!

Sunlounger 2 is out this Saturday (21st June) and is packed full of stories from writers I love and admire. I so hope you will buy it and enjoy being whisked off to exotic climes and I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts on my story 'In Bruges.' I really am excited people will read it but I am also quite scared!!

It has been such an exciting time and I changed my twitter name from @emwantstowrite to @EmIsWriting. People have suggested it many times but I have held off thinking that I am a bit of a fraud since I have lots of times I doubt myself and freeze with my writing. But I feel so fresh and motivated with my writing even though the day job is getting in the way at the moment. I was thinking earlier that it is a shame there isn't a CampNaNo this summer so I might think about having my own little camp! Someone needs to remind me off that comment in July!

So this is just a little nod to my blog's birthday and also a shameless promotion for Sunlounger 2. I am so happy and proud to be part of it! I wanted to post this picture of me and my friends on the day I found out I was joint winner of the competition. I love it because we were happy, had had champagne and cake, the sun was shining and I felt on top of the world!! (ps. I am second from the right, rocking the Deirdre Barlow shades! Actually, most of us are!)

So remember, 21st June Sunlounger 2. It will make your summer!!!
This time last week I had just found out I was joint winner of the Sunlounger 2 competition. I probably had a glass of champagne in my hand right at this moment last week. I think it is fair to say that this time last week I was in a daze. It seemed to only really sink in a few days later that I had actually won. I had won a writing competition. It is simply amazing.

Because I shared the competition results on my Facebook, some people at work now know about my writing. I cannot tell you how strange it is to talk openly about how long I have been writing, what I am writing and how my writing it going. It wasn't that I thought people would laugh or ridicule my dream to be a writer, it was more I was scared if I told people and it came to nothing then I would have to admit I gave up on my dream. If does feel quite pressured to have people asking how often I write or how much I have written that week but actually some friendly pressure will be good for me. I know I am more productive when I am accountable so now people in my day to day life know about my writing, it can only be a good thing.

I do feel different in myself. I think about writing and I feel excitement because I do now feel so much more confident in myself. Don't get me wrong, there will be times I will doubt myself and I'll feel every word is pure rubbish on the page. But I just feel like I need to keep plodding on, plotting and writing and editing and see where it takes me.

I have met some lovely new people including my fellow Sunlounger winner Ella Fairlie who was also a secret writer outed by her win. The writing community on twitter has always been amazing but I am so thankful my circle of writer and book blogger friends has grown on there. I am so excited (and a little nervous!) to hear what everyone thinks of my story when Sunlounger 2 is published on the 21st of June!

June is going to be such an exciting month with the ebook release and it is my third blog birthday on the 13th of June! My poor blog has been through a lot, from the highs of NaNoWriMo to the lows of self-doubt but I hope to be a bit more regular posting on here. It is possibly going to be a bit of a shocking month for my writing though. In the world of us teachers it is report writing time. Reports are always a killer as to do them well takes hours and hours but none of the usual work that keeps you busy most of the time stops. I looked at a couple earlier and they average 1,200 words to 1,300 words per child and I have 26 children in my class. By my maths, that is over 30k of writing but alas, not on my WIP! So I am going to focus on getting them written and enjoying the ride of Sunlounger 2 being published and not beat myself up if I don't make headway with my WIP until July. CampNaNoWriMo is running again in July so that might be a possibility if I am feeling brave!

Speaking of reports, I better go and do some!
Have lovely Saturdays,
If you follow me on twitter you will know that I was actually joint winner of the Sunlounger Short Story Competition !!!! This means that on the 21st of June I will be published in an ebook with some seriously amazing writers. I apologise for all the promotional tweets that I will no doubt be tweeting but I AM BEING PUBLISHED!!!

I have almost pinched myself black and blue but I think it is starting to sink in. One of my best friends Lisa Dickenson is also in the book and she has also written the sweetest blog post about telling me that I had won! I was travelling in a car with some friends to go and see Lisa and I had seen on facebook that I was in the top ten of the competition. I however didn't check my phone (scared much?!) to see that I made the top four and then was announced joint winner! Lisa's post just sums up the moment to perfection and I truly appreciate her support and constant encouragement.

This did mean I was thrust somewhat into the spotlight. Amongst all the hugging and me repeatedly saying 'are you serious?' our friends stood there saying 'what's going on? what's she done?' because they didn't even know I write. When they huddled together to read my first paragraph on facebook I was slightly mortified and excused myself to go and ring my fiance. It suddenly became real. People would know who I am and people in my life would know I write. I have never entered anything before so the idea of winning didn't actually enter my mind. I didn't think of the consequences and suddenly I felt exposed. When my friend's were reading my paragraph I seem to remember saying I felt like I was giving birth on facebook. I hope that makes sense to anyone who has shared their writing with someone for the first time!

The lovely Lauren Garafalo calls me a Secret Agent because I am so secretive about my identity and my writing. I have known her for nearly three years and I have sent her one secret and never to be shared picture of myself. My family kind of know I have written stuff in the past as I told them when I took part in NaNoWriMo for the first time but nothing since then.

But now I am out. And quite happy about it! Everyone has been so supportive that I kind of don't know why I never said before. But I guess revealing that you have won a competition is easier than admitting you spend your time writing things you never let anyone read. And to prove I am out and proud here is a photo of me and my girls, drinking champagne and toasting all the wonderful things that are happening in our lives. I'm the second one from the right with the long blonde hair and the slightly bewildered expression.

I'll keep you updated about all things Sunlounger and will get back to ROW80 asap. Thank you to everyone for all your congratulations and support. It has been amazing!
It has been one of those weeks, I haven't been feeling great and I have had a weekend of family celebrations for my Mum's 60th so I really haven't achieved a lot. Oh, apart from teaching my nephew to say my name!

My goals were:
1) Create a clear plot for my chick-lit WIP.
<div style="background-color: #ffeef4; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21.55px;">
2) Check-in on Sunday.

<div style="background-color: #ffeef4; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21.55px;">

So goal 2 is done with this but goal 1 hasn't gone as well as planned. I have done a lot of thinking for goal 1, mainly when I am driving which is good thinking time. So this goal needs to roll over and will be my main aim for the week ahead. I need to collect all my random notes and stick drawings and plot out my story. Simple.

<div style="background-color: #ffeef4; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21.55px;">

<div style="background-color: #ffeef4; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21.55px;">
Fingers crossed I achieve it this week!

<div style="background-color: #ffeef4; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21.55px;">

If you have been reading my ROW80 check-ins for the past few weeks, you'll know that I was entering a short story competition. I edited my story and I sent it off last Monday. As I pressed send I got that sense of dread, that feeling of fear that someone was going to read it and hate it. But Belinda Jones who is a great writer and the creator of the competition emailed me saying I had done a great job on the story. She used words such as 'warmly humorous' and 'relatable' and it is fair to say she has made my week, if not my month. Sorry if I sound like Mrs Boasty of Boastland but it really made me feel great to have someone I don't even know encourage me with my writing. It may not mean anything happens to the story I entered but it made me feel like I should keep on writing when I was starting to doubt if I should. It is amazing what some kind words from someone can do for your confidence.

Anyway, enough of the boasting.

My goals last week were:

1) Read through short story and email it off.

Achieved! It felt great to finish a project.

2) Create a plan for my next project.

I knew my next project would be finishing the re-write of my chick-lit story but I need to break it down into weekly do-able chunks. I re-wrote 26k of the story during NaNo last year and had a really great brainstorm back in Feb with my friend Lisa Dickenson who is a great writer and it helped me so much to speak through my plot out loud. I ran through my plot with her by using a series of stick man drawings with lots of arrows. Now I look at them, they make little sense but I know she made some great suggestions and I felt like I wanted to tweak the plot but I never got round to it. I also had a clever gchat ages ago with ROW80 sprint leader Lauren Garafalo and she helped get my head around the theme of my story. So I was getting my head around what I wanted to write. I just seemed to never sit down and write.

The natural step for me now seems to be tweaking my plot and adding in the bits and pieces I have thought of recently. I don't want to call it re-plotting as the majority will stay the same and re-plotting sounds scary! I have lots of notes and the stick man drawings to bring together and I feel like I need to immerse myself in my plot and my characters before I start writing. So, this week is all about ending up with a clear plot to work from.

3) Read two books towards 100 books challenge.

I read two books and have now read 27 books towards this challenge. I am still about 10 books behind but hope to catch up.

4) Check-in on Sunday.

Done!

So, for the week ahead my goals are simple:

1) Create a clear plot for my chick-lit WIP.

2) Check-in on Sunday.

I hope everyone has had wonderful weeks and you are finding your stride with your goals. I am hoping I might make a #ROW80 sprint this week, fingers crossed! Have a fabulously productive seven days :)

My goals were:

1) Edit, revise, mould, burn, cry and repeat.
2) THINK OF A TITLE!
3) Check-in on Sunday.

Goal 1 - I managed to print the story out and read it through not editing at all. I then gave it a few days while I mulled things over and had clever thoughts whilst hoovering and driving. Then today I sat down and edited my short story. I have just made the alterations and I am fairly happy with my story! I am however going to leave it overnight and have one more read through tomorrow morning before emailing it off for the competition.

Goal 2 - I have decided on 'In Bruges' as the title. I toyed around with millions of different ones but kept coming back to this one. It is simple and I like that!

Goal 3 - Done when this is posted.

I have still not managed to do much in the week but for now I am happy if I am still achieving things at the weekend! Because the last month has been about my short story, I am going to take this week to recharge and think about my next steps. I am 99% sure that I will continue re-writing my chick-lit story but I may go back at read through the start of the rewrite first. My goals for this week are therefore quite simple.

1) Read through short story and email it off.

2) Create a plan for my next project.

3) Read two books towards 100 books challenge.

4) Check-in on Sunday.

I am trying for the third time to read 100 books in a year. I have managed 25 so far so I am about 11 books behind but as I have no plans to move this year (I have the last two years!) so I am hoping I will achieve this goal!

My goals for week 2 were:

1) Research on location.
2) Write first draft.
3) Check-in on Sunday.

Even though I am a day late with the check-in I am pleased to say all goals have been met. Two weeks in a row, who'd have thought it!?

We had a wonderful time in Bruges. It truly is beautiful and so calm and peaceful. I read lots of the guidebook on the way out there and then took notes of things I thought would work in the story. I sat outside a cafe in a gorgeous square for an hour enjoying a hot chocolate and scribbled down most of draft one of my short story. I managed to finish it off on the way back, partly due to a three hour delay, so I have a very messy, handwritten first version. But it is a start!! It features a lot of recapping which I wasn't sure about so I may try and write in the present tense but the word count limit of 1,000 to 3,000 means I need to keep things tight. We'll see.

So, as we go into week three my goals have changed slightly as the short story deadline is now the 7th of May not the 1st. This allows for more editing/revision time. My goals are:

1) Type up draft one.
2) Possibly try another draft in present tense.
3) Edit, revise, mould, burn, cry and repeat.
I am hoping for another successful week, I just need to not let the day job take over as it usually does. I hope you have all had great weeks and fingers crossed I'll have more good work to report next week!
I am not at work as it is the Easter holidays but I have been busy with lovely things like lunch dates, dinner dates, cinema dates and a massage! In order to meet the tight deadline for the short story competition My goals for week one were:

1) Complete outline and plot short story.
2) Complete character profiles.
3) Check-in on the Sunday.

Happy to say all three goals get a big, fat tick!

I had the loose plot in my head and managed to get it on paper. I have added to it when little sparks have come to mind, usually when I am driving or in the shower, you know, the most awkward times! I am all packed and we leave for our four day trip to Bruges at 6am tomorrow. I have the guidebook and a notebook packed in my handbag so I can research and scribble to my heart's content. My lovely fiancé has been warned!

So, goals for week 2 are:

1) Research on location.
2) Write first draft.
3) Check-in on Sunday

I love the idea of scribbling notes when I am in a cafe by a canal or right after eating a Belgian waffle to capture the exact taste. I hope to start writing when we are away or on the journey back so hopefully I'll meet my week two goals.

I hope everyone has had a good week and here is to a productive week 2!

E.xEmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03069696625147455758noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169148405354916052.post-56099733835876413412014-04-07T19:17:00.000+01:002014-04-07T19:17:01.839+01:00ROW80 round 2 Goals!Let me see if I can remember how to do this whole 'blog post' business. I just read my last post when I was going to join in with the first ROW80 round because on our third attempt we were surely going to get our Internet installed. Surely they would come at the right time on the right day. And then they didn't.

Not having the Internet has held me back and made me feel completely out of the loop. I can get it on my phone but pages won't load and to be honest I could do with a new phone as mine is starting to show signs of old age.

But I am here. And I am excited!! When I have the support of my #row80 friends behind me I do SO MUCH better than when I plod along solo. Now, I just need some goals!

I wasn't sure what to start working on. I am probably a quarter of the way through my chick lit re-write but I haven't looked at that in a whole and the size of the project overwhelms me somewhat. And then, like a writing fairy, my friend Lisa sends me an email telling me the short story competition she entered last year is running again. So I have decided to enter. The only slight issue is the deadline is 1st May so I only have 3 weeks. Therefore my goals for the first 3 weeks of the round will revolve around getting this short story done.

Week one goals:
1) Complete outline and plot short story.
2) Complete character profiles.
3) Check-in on the Sunday.

Week two goals:
1) Research on location (I'm setting it in Bruges where I am going on a mini-break next week! Can't wait! Surely my fiancé will understand...)
2) Write first draft.
3) Check-in on Sunday

Week three goals:
1) Edit, revise, rewrite, mould, burn, cry and repeat until finished.
2) submit the short story.
3) check-in on Sunday.

So, there we have it. I feel excited by this new challenge and feel like I am jumping head first back into this crazy writing game. Good luck I everyone taking part in this round and I look forward to seeing your amazing progress!
I turned 30 and I moved in with my lovely boyfriend and generally had a whale of a time amongst the usual curve balls life throws us all. I only have one regret and that is how badly I lost my writing way. I also missed my second blog birthday which shows how much my head was not screwed on right in June! My poor blog has been neglected partly as we have still not got internet at our flat (we moved in mid-September. I know. Nightmare.) but mainly because for the last six months my writing life has been patchy.

I took part in NaNoWriMo in November for the third time and for the first time I didn't complete it. Life got in the way but I did manage to write 25,000 before I bowed out gracefully and I have decided to be positive about it rather than beat myself up - 25k is 25k! I wrote, I re-read, I pondered but I had no real routine or plan.

2014 is going to be about routine. Even if I struggle to make a daily routine I want to get in a weekly routine and a huge part of this is taking part in ROW80 as I need the accountability and I miss the community and support of my fellow ROWers. I stopped taking part mid round as I think I was fed up of not having much to report and I felt like I was failing a bit at this whole writing game.

I need to set my goals on Monday 6th when the new round starts but I already know I am going to aim to read 100 books in a year. I managed 70 books last year and 78 the year before but both times I was hampered by moving house. This year we WILL NOT be moving so I hope I can finally achieve this goal! I also want some sort of exercise goal in there as this is another area in which I need some routine.

One of my first jobs is to edit and polish the first section of my re-written chick-lit story as I won a critique early in 2013 but had nothing I wanted anyone else to read. This must be my first focus as much as it scares me to let someone read it I know it is a necessary step.

I'll put my thinking cap on and finalise my goals by Monday. It feels good to be back!Emhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03069696625147455758noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169148405354916052.post-69700869250217401562013-06-16T20:15:00.000+01:002013-06-16T20:15:54.634+01:00ROW80 Check-in 16th June 2013Another crazy week in my 'real life', another successful one here! This is how I have got on:

1) Read as much as possible aiming for at least TWO books a week.
Reading time has been near impossible to find. Which I hate. I am reading Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo and am 65% through (good old Kindle!). I am loving it but as I said I am not getting much of a chance to read it! Hopefully I will finish it this week. I meant to mention that my blog is listed in the ones thanked at the start of the UK version as I reviewed The Gathering Dark (Shadow and Bone) last year. I can't tell you what a thrill it was to see my blog listed in a real life book! It made me think about how INSANELY great it would be if something I had written was an actual book! Little bit of motivation right there!

2) Write 5 sentences a day.
My five sentences a day goal is still going well! Whilst sometimes the sentences still reflect my day/things that are on my mind I have started to include more story/plot ideas.

3) Write a ROW80 check-in each Sunday.
Done :)

Once again my progress feels small but at least I am doing something. With work as it is at the moment this is what I feel I can achieve. Fingers cross over the summer I will be able to step things up a gear. I hope you have all had wonderful weeks and have a wonderful week to come!Emhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03069696625147455758noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169148405354916052.post-32070892139699096492013-06-09T19:44:00.000+01:002013-06-09T19:44:09.271+01:00ROW80 Check-in 9th June 2013Another week of tiny, weeny progress. But progress is progress! This is how I have got on:

1) Read as much as possible aiming for at least TWO books a week.
As predicted the moment I got back to work my lovely reading time was snatched away! I read one book this week so I have read 35 books so far this year. Reading time is still going to be tough to find but I hope to keep reading as much as possible.

2) Write 5 sentences a day.I am still loving this challenge! I forgot to do my five sentences one day so I did ten the next day. I do find that the sentences reflect my day/things that are on my mind. I want to start gearing them more towards story/plot ideas.

3) Write a ROW80 check-in each Sunday.
Done :)

I feel this is manageable at the moment especially as work is crazy busy but I hope to get back to writing soon. Maybe rewriting my chick-lit, maybe something new, who knows! Hope you have all been productive this week and get even more done next week!Emhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03069696625147455758noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169148405354916052.post-4772391082210542292013-06-02T20:47:00.000+01:002013-06-02T20:47:08.147+01:00ROW80 Check-in 2nd June 2013Some progress has been made this week!

Here were my lovely little goals and how I have done:
1) Read as much as possible aiming for at least TWO books a week.
I wasn't at work this week as it was half term and I got lots of lovely reading done. I read five books. Five! My good old kindle has barely been out of my hand. I am currently reading book 35 of the year which is still behind schedule but I have made up a little ground. Now I am back at work the pace will slow down again but I enjoyed having lots of reading time!
2) Write 5 sentences a day.
Success! I wrote five sentences a day in a little notebook. Some were random thoughts, some were ideas, some were observations I made of things I saw. It felt good to be getting something down however short.

3) Write a ROW80 check-in each Sunday.
Done!

So a successful week. I am slowly tiptoeing my way back into writing and I hope to keep going this week. I hope you all have a wonderful week!Emhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03069696625147455758noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169148405354916052.post-25950102466400624082013-05-26T12:41:00.001+01:002013-05-26T12:41:56.859+01:00ROW80 Check-in 26th May 2013Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone who commented on my check-in last week or tweeted me about it. Even though I know you ROW80 buddies are there I sometimes lose sight of how great you are! No-one judged me and people gave me useful tips. I've spent this week thinking and I have come u with a plan of action even though my goals are not that impressive!

1) Read as much as possible aiming for at least TWO books a week.

2) Write 5 sentences a day.

3) Write a ROW80 check-in each Sunday.

So goal one stays the same and this week I am off work so hopefully I will have lots of lovely reading time. I am currently reading book 30 of the year. Goal three is simple but I know I need to check-in to be accountable.

Goal two is new. Eden suggested this in her comment last week and I like the idea. The five sentences can be thoughts, ideas, things I have overheard, anything! I like this idea because no matter how crazy work gets in the next two months, (and it will get CRAZY!) I will be able to write five sentences about something. I am quite excited by this plan and feel it will get my writing head back in action.

So simple but effective. That is the plan! Hope you have wonderful weeks!Emhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03069696625147455758noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169148405354916052.post-45529803785728387112013-05-19T13:00:00.000+01:002013-05-19T13:00:01.976+01:00Row80 Check-in 18th May 2013I have completely lost my way. I don't quite know when it happened and I have no idea why but I have suddenly lost all faith in my writing and my ability. Nothing triggered it. Well, nothing I am aware of anyway. I just suddenly one day a few weeks ago thought 'Why are you doing this? You can't write anything good so why bother?'

So I slunk away and didn't say anything. I haven't written anything and I haven't read any of my WIP. I haven't been on Twitter much and I haven't been checking in. I just don't quite know what to do.

I have been reading so my goal of Read as much as possible aiming for at least TWO books a week is still kind of in play. I have read 27 books this year so behind schedule for my 100 books this year goal but there is still time. For now I might just go with that. I need to find a way forward because I do want to write. I just have a block. And not writer's block. Just a block.

When Lauren asked me if I was still alive today on Twitter I figured I better say something. I'll find my way, I'm sure. I just maybe need some time.

I hope you are all going strong and smashing your goals. I hope to check-in again with a bit more focus and direction. But for now, I'll continue reading.

Here were my goals:
1) Read as much as possible aiming for at least TWO books a week.

2) Read through my chick-lit first draft and make notes. At least ten minutes a day.

3) Write a ROW80 check-in each Sunday.
Goal One
I finished book 22 and have nearly finished book 23. I had a train journey yesterday and today and read 408 pages and hope to finish this book later tonight. I love reading!

Goal Two
On Monday and Tuesday I did ten minutes of reading my WIP per day and made notes on two and a half chapters. Since then, nothing. No excuse. I was busy but I could have found ten minutes. MUST DO BETTER THIS WEEK!

Goal Three
Done!

I am not going to analyse. I am just going to move on! Hope you have had wonderful weeks and hopefully this week I will DO BETTER!!Emhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03069696625147455758noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169148405354916052.post-38671949487384184322013-04-21T17:41:00.002+01:002013-04-21T17:43:03.031+01:00ROW80 Check-in 21st April 2013Well it has been a busy crazy week in many ways! First, let's check out my goals and how I did!

1) Read as much as possible aiming for at least TWO books a week.

2) Read through my chick-lit first draft and make notes. At least ten minutes a day.

3) Write a ROW80 check-in each Sunday.

Goal One
I read book 21 of the year and am halfway through book 22 and loving it!

Goal Two
Success! Nearly!

I was aiming for 10 minutes each day of re-reading and making notes and I managed ten every day but one so I did 20 minutes the next day. I felt much more like a habit was starting to form even though it is very much a baby step. Ten minutes isn't an intimidating amount so it felt achievable except the day work got in the way. Very pleased with this change of goal and starting to form some firm opinions on how my re-write should go because my WIP definitely needs a re-write!

Goal Three
Check!

All in all I am feeling positive and trying not to get too down about all the changes that need to be made. You need the words down to be able to change them though right?! My concern is I don't think it needs to be edited, I think it needs to be completely re-written. An edit would not do enough and I think I need to <strike>tweak</strike> overhaul the plot. But it will be fine!

Something lovely happened this week! I saw a tweet that if you retweeted it you might win a query critique. I retweeted it and I WON! I never thought I would win in a million years! I felt like quite a fraud because whilst I have notes for my WIP query because I am going to re-write it, the notes I have probably won't make much sense! And it will need to change! So I tweeted the lovely jessmontgomery and explained my situation. She was absolutely wonderful and understands my situation. She has been kind and said she will critique my query whenever it is ready even if it takes a year! Let's face it, it probably will! It made me feel a bit overwhelmed, in a good way! For someone who I have never had any contact with to be so understanding and kind to me made me realise what a wonderful community the online writing community is. I knew Jess was EMCastellan's crit partner so I know she must be good people :) It made my week. And made me more determined to read this WIP and get started re-writing it!

I hope you are all having fantastic weeks and here is to another great one!!Emhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03069696625147455758noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169148405354916052.post-61190845327670395712013-04-14T17:00:00.001+01:002013-04-14T17:00:37.124+01:00ROW80 Check-in 14th April 2013Well, this week has been a mixed bag of success. I think a little goal change is in order!

Here were my goals for this week:

1) Read as much as possible aiming for at least TWO books a week.

2) Read through my chick-lit first draft and make notes. At least an hour and a half of this each week.

3) Write a ROW80 check-in each Sunday.

Goal One
I managed to read two books this week (books 19 and 20 of the year) and am halfway through a third. I have also started a non-fiction book given to me which I will read alongside the fiction one. I got lots of reading done but was hoping for more to make up some ground on my 100 books in a year challenge but I feel happy with how this week has gone with this goal.

Goal Two
This goal hasn't gone so well. I have many issues with myself as a writer. One issue is I am worse at getting things done if I have time on my hands. I haven't been at work this week and yes, I have had plans but I could have done lots of reading of my WIP, but I didn't. I did that age old thing of putting it off till tomorrow and then crammed some in today. I read through 5 chapters of my WIP today in half an hour so I am an hour short for this goal. I do seem to struggle to get in a writing habit unless I am in a NaNoWriMo situation so I think this goal needs some tweaking. I am going to change my goal to reading my WIP for ten minutes each day. This is completely do-able and of course I can do more than ten minutes but that is at least an hour and ten minutes of reading a week and will hopefully help me develop a habit of doing something every day.

Linked to this goal is the good news that I found the end of my WIP in a bag of writing things in my flat. I genuinely have no recollection of handwriting the end of my WIP but I am so relieved I found it! I found some bits I like in my WIP in the chapters I read today but again, lots of painful notes to myself. If I write 'Show don't tell' enough hopefully it will sink in?! My favourite note to my self from this week is 'Needs sexier co-worker then old lady?' Sometimes I amaze myself!

Goal Three
Done!

So, not a terrible week but definitely could do better! Here are my goals for the week ahead:
1) Read as much as possible aiming for at least TWO books a week.

2) Read through my chick-lit first draft and make notes. At least ten minutes a day.

3) Write a ROW80 check-in each Sunday.

I hope you all have had wonderful weeks and good luck for the week ahead!Emhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03069696625147455758noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169148405354916052.post-88012352588133045262013-04-07T18:02:00.000+01:002013-04-07T18:02:57.633+01:00ROW80 Check-in 7th April 2013Well week one has gone well! I am on holiday from School so I should have probably achieved double what I achieved but still, achieving something is an achievement, right?!

Here are my goals:
1) Read as much as possible aiming for at
least TWO books a week.

2) Read through my chick-lit first draft and make
notes. At least an hour and a half of this each
week.

3) Write a
ROW80 check-in each Sunday.
And here is how my week has looked:

Monday - Finished a book I was reading (book 16 of the year).

Wednesday - Put all of my WIP in one document to re-read as it was scattered all over the place. It was today that I had a mini freak out when I couldn't find the end of my WIP. By checking my blog post from last year I uncovered that I handwrote the end. How do I not remember this?! Fingers and toes crossed I can find it when I get back to my flat on Wednesday!

Thursday - Finished a book (book 17 of the year).
30 minutes re-reading my WIP and making notes on four chapters.

Friday - 20 minutes reading through WIP and made notes on four chapters.

Sunday - Finished a book (book 18 of the year).
50 minutes reading WIP and made notes on 5 chapters

So I have achieved all three goals this week! I have LOVED having reading time and I have enjoyed re-reading my WIP even though I make painful notes such as 'change the plot/change the order of the whole thing'. I have some thinking to do about my MC and the theme of the story (wink at Lauren for the gchat earlier!) but I will mull them over as I read through the rest of my WIP.

I hope you are all having fantastic weeks and let's hope the coming week is even better!!Emhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03069696625147455758noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169148405354916052.post-7333179380606766052013-04-01T12:23:00.002+01:002013-04-01T12:23:55.710+01:00ROW80 Goals for Round Two!The last month didn't go as planned. I didn't end up submitting a story for the short story competition after all. To cut a long story short it was a slight confidence dip mixed with trying to force a story because of the requirements of the competition and not writing a story I loved. I might go into the details one day and I had moments where I did think about whether I wanted to carry on with this crazy writing game but I am ok. As always I need to give a huge shout out to the lovely Lauren who really helped me and I felt quite overwhelmed by the time she put into helping me. It also scared me how well she can 'read me' even though she has not met me in person. Yet!

So, here we are. A fresh round of ROW80 and a fresh Em. Hopefully!

I toyed with the idea of doing CampNaNo alongside this round but I didn't have the preparation time I needed. I have done a lot of thinking and have decided I am going to re-write my first chick-lit story. I love the premise of this story but HATE the way I wrote it! I was thinking of re-writing during Camp but I know I need to actually stop, read the first draft and do some planning/plotting/sorting before I start re-writing.

Therefore April = THE MONTH OF READING!

My plan is to read, read and read some more as I am behind with my 100 books in a year challenge but I also need to read through my chick-lit draft and make notes. It is all about reading! I am not going to set any writing goals but reading through my story and plotting/planning will be invaluable when I come to re-write my story.

Therefore, my goals this round are:

1) Read as much as possible aiming for at least TWO books a week.

2) Read through my chick-lit first draft and make notes. At least an hour and a half of this each week.

3) Write a ROW80 check-in each Sunday.

Simple goals work best for me and I am excited about this new round! I hope everyone feels like they know where they are heading and I look forward to sharing this round with you!Emhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03069696625147455758noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169148405354916052.post-36777459108907624662013-03-24T08:57:00.001+00:002013-03-24T08:57:16.636+00:00ROW80 Check-in Sunday 24th March 2013It has been a busy week at work. I know I keep saying that but this week really and truly was insane. Here were my goals:

1) Read two books a week in order to read
100 books this year!

2) a) change short story
draft,
b) email to Lauren with fingers
crossed,
c) submit to
competition!

3) Write a ROW80 check-in
every Sunday.
So, let's see how I have done.

Goal One
I finished book number 14 this year and managed to squeeze in a little reading time. I have a shelf of books to be read and am meant to be reading through them before I buy any new ones. But on Wednesday I accidently bought three new books. I have no excuse and I'd do it again! I am about ten books behind where I should be for the 100 books in a year challenge but I have a plan which I'll talk about later.

Goal Two
I did change my short story draft and then I printed it out and yesterday I edited it again. I wasn't expecting as much pink pen as the first edit but there is still lots of pink pen! I am starting to freak out about sending it to Lauren and the competition because I am not 100% happy with it so I am going to wait till tomorrow to send it to Lauren as I feel I need to think more on it. I know I am stalling and it might mean she doesn't have time to read it which will only be my fault for procrastinating but I need to take a step away. I am going to submit it whatever because I need to challenge myself to do that.

Goal Three
DONE!

Now as I mentioned earlier I need a plan. I needed a plan for CampNaNo and for reading so I have come up with a plan of sorts. In April I am not going to take part in camp. I am slightly gutted as I love the NaNo experience but I am completely unprepared and feel I need to look at some of the writing I have already done rather than hash out 50k new words. So I have decided April will be a month of reading. Even typing that makes me feel happy! I need to get some quality reading time in partly for my sanity and partly for my 100 books goal. But I have added a twist as I felt it was a cop out to not write in April. One of the things I must read and make notes on is my first finished chick lit novel. I have spoken about this one before and I love the premise but not the main character and it had the first 50k in the wrong tense so needs work. I also know that I don't like the way I wrote it. I was going through a tough time in my own love life (remember that? not pretty!) which I know impacted on my writing and my writing was much too serious. I was thinking of re-writing it for NaNo but I know if I don't stop, read it, make notes and sort out some issues I will end up hammering out lots of words that will need lots of work. So that is my plan for April and I'll be able to have these goals as my ROW80 goals for the new round and also jump in on some sprints.

It has been a bumpy round but I am still here and excited for round 2! Thank you for all your comments and support especially those of you on twitter who are nothing short of amazing! Here is hoping the next round is even better than this one has been!Emhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03069696625147455758noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169148405354916052.post-48361848510660100902013-03-17T17:54:00.002+00:002013-03-17T17:54:14.051+00:00ROW80 Check-in 17th March 2013Well it has been a calmer week and I have achieved some goals but failed miserably on one. Here were my goals:

1) Read two books a week in order to read
100 books this year!

2) Finish first draft
of short story in third
person.

3) Write a ROW80 check-in
every Sunday.

Goal One
Really struggling with this! I am still reading book number 14 of the year but I have barely found time to read this week and weekend. It is a JoJo Moyes book and I love her work but I am just not finding the time. I am about 8 books behind where I would ideally be but I have a two week break soon which means lots of lovely reading time. After posting this I am going to have a relaxing evening so will do some readng. As I always say, there is time to catch up on this one!

Goal Two
COMPLETE! I finished the draft in third person of my short story and it works a better than the first person draft so I am pleased I tried it. The first draft was 1,700 words long but I did the first edit today and whilst I have cut, re-arranged and scrawled out words I also added some. I edited in pink as it feels more positive then red and I am glad I did because there is A LOT of pink on the page!

Goal Three
Done!

So it has been a sucessful week writing wise and as mentioned I have done my first edit. It was painful but the bare bones were there. I need to make the changes on the computer but I am going to do that tomorrow and hopefully the always wonderful Lauren is going to cast her eye over it for me. I have the craziest week at work so I am going to keep goals one and three the same and goal two needs to be simple!

1) Read two books a week in order to read 100 books this year!

2) a) change short story draft,
b) email to Lauren with fingers crossed,
c) submit to competition!

3) Write a ROW80 check-in every Sunday.

Oh, hang on. Simple goal three has ended up with three parts! But they are necessary as the deadline is on the 31st March. I aim to be at the sprint tomorrow to do my editing and then the rest of the week is going to be a wash out apart from hopefully some reading time. Next Saturday will hopefull be the day I submit the story. Deep breath. It is also a huge thing for me to let the lovely Lauren read it as no-one has really read anything I have written before. Two deep breaths! But I know she will be honest but gentle!

I hope you are all smashing your goals and have a wonderful week!
My goals were:

1) Read two books a week in order to read
100 books this year!

2) Finish first draft of short story.

3) Write a ROW80 check-in
every Sunday.

Goal One:
I finished book number 13 this week and started reading another but it was a crazy week at work and I didn't get a lot of reading time. I want to get more reading time in this week and next weekend should be quiet so I will hopefully get to read lots! Hopefully!

Goal Two:
I DID IT!!! I finished the first draft of my short story. I wrote 833 words on Monday and 541 words on Saturday so it is complete at 4,011 words. I now need to write a first draft in third person as the more I think about it the more I think third person will work better. The only issue is I need to write and then edit it by March 31st. Eeeek!

Goal Three:
Done!

So this week my goals are pretty much the same with a tweak to goal 2!

1) Read two books a week in order to read 100 books this year!

2) Finish first draft of short story in third person.

3) Write a ROW80 check-in every Sunday.

That's right! I am going to try and write an entire first draft this week! I need to if I am going to have enough editing time and this week is calmer (hopefully!) at work then next week so I need to get cracking!!

Now, before I go we need to talk about CampNaNo. I found out that they were holding a Camp in April and July as opposed to August. July will be NO good for me because work will be crazy so that is a no go. April is......soon! I have no idea if I am going to do it but you can set your own word limit which would be good and lots of my ROW80 buddies are taking part and I want to be in the gang! My issue would be with the short story deadline being prepared and ready to write anything. But I was thinking I could re-write my first chick-lit novel. I love the premise of the story but the first 50k words were in the wrong tense and I told the story all wrong. I told it too seriously and the main character needed some work! But I feel I could pick that up and write it with the notes I have. I need to think more on this but I think I am in. Even for a few thousand words.

Anyway, hope you have had wonderful weeks and the next week is even better than the last!
