ROW80 Check-in Sunday 24th February 2013

Well, what a week. I was full of plans to have NO plans and keep things calm but that never really happens. I think I am one of those people who is more productive the less time they have. Some days I have had hours to do things but waited till last minute to squeeze in half an hour. But I have been somewhat successful!

Here are my goals!
1) Read two books a week in order to read 100 books this year!

2) Spend 30 minutes a day, five times on short story for competition. Prep, reading notes, research and writing all count.

3) Write a ROW80 check-in every Sunday.
Goal 1 - Definitely achieved this this week. I have finished one book and read three. I have just started reading book number 13 so I am a few behind where I should be but have made up some ground here.

Goal 2 - I have done two and a half hours of short story things. Two half hour slots and one long hour and a half slot yesterday. I can't seem to get into a daily habit but when life calms down (ha!) I hope to do this. Here is what I did:
Monday - 30 minutes spent working on short story notes, jotting down ideas, crossing out bad ideas!

Thursday - 30 minutes writing out brief outline and brief character notes. Writing a short story is a completely different beast and I know I don't need to get bogged down in the details at this stage.

Saturday - An hour and a half of writing, yes WRITING! I tend to put this off and distract myself with such activities as nail painting so my nails look nice as I write but today I managed to sit and write. It will need a lot of editing as as usual I am unsure if I should be writing in first person or whether third would be better. I think I'll try both.

Goal 3 - done!

So there you have it, I have done well this week although not being at work I should have achieved a lot more than I have but I achieved my goals and that is the main thing!!! I hope everyone has had wonderful weeks. Time is flying so I hope you are really finding your stride!

  1. It's great to hear you're making progress with your short story! See you during the Twitter sprints and have a good week :)

  2. Hooray for productivity! Hope you have another good week :)

  3. You are making great progress! I am sure you will figure out 1st or 3rd person. Sometimes I write mock journal entries from the main characters POV, to see how 1st person would work and determine whose head I want to be inside of (and whose thoughts I want the reader to know or not know). This helps...sometimes. LOL And Yay for all that reading! Hope you have a great week!

  4. So glad you've had a nice week off and been productive!! You'll get into the swing of things with doing your half hour everyday. I also have trouble with making things a daily's why I've been experimenting with setting exact times for things. It seems to help me at least! Have a wonderful week this week :D

  5. Sounds like a productive week to me! Best of luck with your short story -- it'll be fun to try a new form. :)

  6. First of all, I am thinking of stealing your goal to read 100 books in a year, it sounds like paradise (I would have to cut down a bit on the writing, so maybe next year, or next financial year).
Second, and this is going to sound like a bit of self promotion, but I don't mean it like that: in two weeks I'm launching my first self-published book about how to prepare for a lifestyle of writing (The Five Day Writer's Retreat). It has some pretty useful hints on how to arrange life to make it easier to fit writing in, if I do say so myself. The reason this isn't self promotion is because I'm giving copies for free to those who sign up to the newsletter for the series. So, if you would be interested, check out

  7. Good job writing your weekly blog entry and also getting most of that 2.5 hours per day done, too. Improvement is the order of the day, so keep it up!

  8. Thanks for sharing This is a great post, I stumbled across your article while looking for some random stuff. Thanks for sharing, I’ll be sure to return regularly.
