ROW80 Check-in 3rd October 2012

I m not sure I should call this a check-in as I have nothing to report! Partly because I haven't decided on my goals. I was all set to slope off into the background this round as I wasn't ready by the first to declare my goals but the ever motivational Lauren reminded me that I don't have to set goals that will last all round. And just because I wasn't there on the first of the month doesn't mean I shouldn't join in at a later date.

So. One for sure goal is:
1) Read two books a week for 100+ reading challenge (or as much as I can!).
I have read 67 books so am doing well but I think way behind with the challenge. I must find more time to read!!!

I want a writing goal but I just don't know where to head. I have nearly 60,000 words written of Matchmaker, Matchmaker but I seem to have come to a bit of a motivational slump. NaNoWriMo starts on the 1st of November and I really, really want to take part as I love the community and how productive I am during NaNo. I also want to start interacting with more writers in my area as sadly you guys aren't down the road! So I want to go to some local NaNo events. Hearing of people brainstorming makes me feel so exited and maybe it is what I need to kick start me back into writing.

However, I have a problem. I coud be a rebel and work on Matchmaker but I don't think there is 50,000 words left to go. I also feel kind of strange about starting something new when I am so far into Matchmaker however I did do this last year when I wrote my murder mystery in the middle of writing my last WIP.

So these are my options:
1) Be a NaNo rebel and carry on with Matchmaker but probably not win as there aren't 50,000 words left.
2) Don't take part in NaNo and carry on with Matchmaker. I don't like this option.
3) Start something fresh and return to Matchmaker at a later date.

Opinions? Advice? All will be welcome so I am going to set myself another goal to go with my reading one.

2) Work out what I am going to do next with my writing.
Not my most measurabe goal to date but atleast I am here!!! Hope everyone else has got off to a great start this round!!

  1. I'm pretty much doing your #3. I started a new WiP last month, but I don't think I'll have 50,000 words worth left to write by November, not if I can meet my goal of 30,000 words this month. So, I'm planning on writing something new for NaNo and either setting this one aside for a month or work on it after I get my NaNo words in each day.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

  2. Here is my friend reminder not to let other people's guidelines (in this case, Nano's guidelines) completely dictate your choice. I LOVE Nano..probably a little more than I should, but I think of it solely as writing 50k in a month with hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. I've seen a lot of writers say, "I just can't write a book in a month," but I feel like with a perspective shift, they'd realize that most BOOKS are more than 50k, and the whole point is to just get words out. I'm totally admitting that I ignore all the other rules. I don't care if that 50k is 1/2 on one project and 1/2 on another, if it's an old project/new project. As long as at the heart of it all, you're trying to write 50k new words in Nov, then who cares?!

All that being said, and knowing all that I do about you, I'm betting that #3 is your best option this time. Matchmaker is well on its way - there's no danger that you're going to forget about it. And you have hinted that you might need something to throw yourself into and get excited about...that something might be the FANTASY that you've been wanting to do?!!?! Okay, I'm done being a bad influence..or good, I suppose...depending how you look at it! <3 <3

  3. can one claim a win if you write 50,000 on two projects? I have two in mind and cannot decide which one to do:( do a bit of both would be cool - anyway I think I agree with Lauren number 3 would be good and sometimes a break away is added spice on the return - all the best

  4. If I were to pick, I'd probably stay with Matchmaker and do NaNo another time. My second choice would be to do something fresh for NaNo and go back to your current WIP after November. And, you know, you might find that you can finish your WIP and your NaNoNovel both at the same time. Good luck regardless.

  5. Bwahaha, I cosign with Lauren! I believe quite strongly in being a rebel and all that... but I am going to be the devil on your shoulder whispering, "fantasy... fantasy... fantasy!" Take that with a grain of salt, though, 'cause I'm the gal that has 4 unfinished WIPs sitting on her hard drive, and is planning to start a brand new project in November. I'm quite clearly trying to drag you down with me. :P

Don't worry about doing mini-goals to get you through the round! I really enjoy Gene's take on all this--he's only posting goals for each week, which will allow him to be a little more flexible for those days when "life happens" and all of that.

I'm so glad to see you! And whatever you decide for NaNo, I am sure that you will get lots of writing done. :D

  6. "Work out what I am going to do next with my writing."

Sometimes that's the best thing to do -- take stock of where you are, and use that info to make your next move. Hope it's going well for you!
